Our monthly meetings are held 10 months (except July & December) at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 101 E 38th St., Tacoma, WA.
Annual Dues are $20.00 for an individual and $25.00 a couple for a full year, $10.00 for an individual and $15.00 a couple for one half year (July-December). This includes our monthly newsletter.
About our society
Thank you for your interest in the Tacoma Orchid Society. Tacoma Orchid Society was founded in May of 1954 by Dr. Phillip Fehland. The goal of our society is to expand our knowledge and appreciation of orchids while having fun in the process. Tacoma Orchid Society members are an eclectic group of orchid enthusiasts ranging from beginners to professional growers.

July Auction & Picnic
Every July in lieu of a regular monthly meeting the society has a potluck picnic and plant auction. It is a great time to thin out or expand your orchid collection. Many great buys can be had at this event.
Every December in lieu of a regular monthly meeting the society has a Christmas Party. The Christmas party is a time for recognizing the accomplishments and showing our appreciation to all our member’s for their contributions to the society.
TOS Sales Table
The TOS Sales table is a way for our members to purchase orchids or orchid related items at a reasonable price. Every member is eligible to bring something to sell.
How to Participate as a Seller
Items eligible for sale include plants or any orchid related books, supplies, clothing, jewelry and/or miscellaneous items. If you are bringing a plant to sell please make sure it is disease and bug free. Any plant that is not will be removed by the person in charge of the Sales Table. 15 % of the proceeds go to the society.
Badges are a nice way to associate a name with the faces of our society members. Permanent badges are available for all paying society members. If it is not there, write your name on a blank badge and inform the Officers your badge is missing. If you are a paying member a permanent badge will be available for you at the next meeting. Please put your badge back the end of the meeting.
The TOS Raffle is fun way we generate money for the society. Various items for raffle are either purchased by the society or donated by society members. Feel free to donate any orchid related item.
How to Participate in the Raffle
The tickets may be purchased before the start of the meeting or during the social time. The TOS Raffle is held after the social time
TOS Show and Tell
Our show and tell table is a way for our members to share not only their successes but tips on growing certain orchids with other members. At the social hour each member votes on their favorite species and on their favorite hybrid.
How to Show and Tell
Every member is eligible to bring a plant for show and tell. Please limit your show and tell to five plants. All plants must have been brought to bloom by yourself. Please bring only disease and bug- free plants
How to Vote for Show & Tell
Every member is eligible to vote. Place a poker chip next to your favorite species and one next to your favorite hybrid.
The Tacoma Orchid Society provides all the beverages, cups and napkins. All food items or desserts are provided by society members. If you bring a refreshment to share please fill-out one of the refreshment slips and drop it in the refreshment can for your chance to win a beautiful plant at the yearly drawing held during our Christmas party.
TOS Library Library books are available for check-out by any active club member. We have a variety of books available ranging from introduction to orchid growing all the way to the more advanced publications for those long-time orchid enthusiasts.
How to Check-Out a Library Book
Refer to the Library Holdings List for the book you would like to check out. Look in the Library Catalog to see if it is available. Pull the card. Write your name, phone number and date on the card. Place it in the Bring to Next Meeting section in the Library Catalog.
How to Return a Library Book
Pull the appropriate card from the Out section in the Library Catalog. Place it in the library book. Put the book on the table next to the Library Catalog
Featured Speakers or Monthly Program
Throughout the year we offer a mixture of beginners, intermediate and advanced topics. The speakers range from orchid professionals that specialize in individual species to some of our own members sharing their years of knowledge about general orchid culture. Be sure to check the current newsletter for upcoming speakers.
Volunteering for TOS
Volunteering is essential to the success of our society. Without volunteers we would not be able to provide the variety of activities, programs and shows that make us a strong society. There are many different ways you can volunteer. In March of each year we have sign- up sheets at the information table for you to show your support.
Show Committee Chairman – responsible for show dates, processing necessary paperwork, procuring show dates/locations, notifying society of dates/locations and submitting receipts for show expenses to treasurer.
Show Committee Display Coordinators – coordinating of design and theme of show displays, obtaining props/materials for the display, set-up/take-down of displays and submitting receipts for display expenses to treasurer.
Show Committee Volunteer Coordinator – determines the number of volunteers and times to be staffed, responsible for sign- in sheets and distributing free admission or parking tickets when applicable.
Christmas Party Committee – a temporary committee responsible for finding a location for the Christmas party, setting-up decorations and finding options for food.
Refreshment Delegate – responsible for monthly setup of the refreshment table, purchasing of the napkins, plates, coffee, tea, sugar and creamer and submitting receipts to the treasurer for reimbursement.
Sunshine Delegate –sending out cards/flowers to members for various occasions.
Raffle Delegate – responsible for obtaining raffle plants, orchid related items, and/or donations by society members, conducting the sale of raffle tickets and overseeing raffle drawing and submitting money received to the treasurer.
Greeter Delegate- responsible for giving an information packet and tour of the workings of a meeting to guests. The packets contains TOS membership applications, TOS welcome brochure, culture sheets, pests & disease information and repotting information.
Public Relation Delegate- responsible for forming relationships with local newspapers and locations that sell orchids. Duties include setting-up presentations and/or displays at locations that sell orchids, contacting the newspaper about upcoming events, supplying locations that sell orchids with TOS flyers and culture information sheets.
Event Volunteer Coordinator – determines the number of volunteers and times to be staffed, responsible for sign- in sheets and distributing free admission or parking tickets when applicable.
